Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai staged a dramatic protest in Coimbatore on Friday, condemning the ruling DMK government and the state police for their handling of a sexual assault case involving a Chennai college student. The incident reportedly occurred on Christmas Eve inside Anna University, a premier technical institution in the state.
Annamalai, clad in a green dhoti and bare-chested, took a whip from a party worker and repeatedly flogged himself in front of his residence. Around him, BJP workers displayed placards criticizing the state police for allegedly leaking the FIR, compromising the identity of the victim.
The agitation follows a press conference held on Thursday, where Annamalai announced he would not wear footwear until the DMK government was ousted from power. The former IPS officer accused the state police of deliberate misconduct, claiming that the disclosure of the victim's identity was intentional and added to her trauma.
“One person has been arrested in connection with this case, but the actions of the police and the government reflect their negligence and insensitivity,” Annamalai said. The case, which involves the assault of a college student, has sparked outrage, with opposition parties accusing the DMK-led government of failing to ensure women’s safety. Annamalai's protest, marked by self-flagellation, has drawn both support and criticism for its theatrics.
